Technical Analysis: Different Characteristics of RS485 and RS232 in Application

In fields such as industrial control and communication equipment, RS485 and RS232 are two common serial communication interfaces. Although they look similar in name, they each have their own characteristics and applicable scenarios in practical applications. Today, we will provide a detailed analysis of the distinct features of RS485 and RS232 to help you better choose the appropriate communication interface.

I. Transmission distance and rate

RS485:

  • Transmission distance: Up to 1200 meters (when the rate is lower than 100Kbps), suitable for long-distance communication.

  • Speed: Up to 10Mbps at most, but in practical applications, it is affected by transmission distance and line quality.

RS232:

  • Transmission distance: Generally no more than 15 meters, suitable for short-distance communication;

  • Rate: The maximum standard rate is 20Kbps, but in practical applications, it is often lower than this value.

II. Communication mode

RS485:

  • It adopts differential signal transmission, has strong anti-interference ability and is suitable for environments with high noise.

  • Support multi-point communication, that is, multiple RS485 devices can be connected in one network.

RS232:

  • Single-ended signal transmission is adopted, and the anti-interference ability is relatively weak.

  • Generally, it can only achieve point-to-point communication, that is, one RS232 interface can only connect to one device.

III. Electrical characteristics

RS485:

  • It has a relatively high common-mode voltage range, up to ±7V, and can adapt to harsh electrical environments.

  • The output terminal has strong driving capability and can be connected to multiple loads.

RS232:

  • The common-mode voltage range is relatively low, generally ±25V.

  • The output terminal has a relatively weak driving capacity and can generally only connect to one load.

Iv. Application scenarios

RS485:

  • It is applicable to occasions that require long-distance and multi-point communication, such as industrial sites, building automation, etc.

  • In an environment with high noise, the stability of RS485 is superior.

RS232:

  • It is suitable for short-distance, point-to-point communication scenarios, such as the connection between computers and peripherals.

  • In scenarios where the communication distance is short and environmental interference is small, RS232 can meet the requirements.

Through the above analysis, I believe everyone has gained a deeper understanding of the different characteristics of RS485 and RS232 in their applications. When making an actual choice, factors such as specific requirements, communication distance, and environmental interference should be comprehensively considered to select the most suitable communication interface.
