Router Buying Pitfalls

The router market is "deep" : Some people spend a thousand yuan on "high-end models" but still have poor signal, while others use a hundred-yuan phone but can cover the entire house. The key lies in avoiding these three major misunderstandings


Misconception 1: More antennas = better signal

Actual test: The "wall-penetrating king" with 8 antennas may not be as good as the enterprise-level AP with 2 antennas. Signal strength depends on antenna gain (dB value) and beamforming technology, rather than quantity. For instance, a directional antenna can focus the signal on the living room, reducing ineffective coverage.

Misconception 2: wifi 6/7= You must buy a new one

If there are no more than 10 devices at home and 8K video streaming is not available, a WiFi5 router is sufficient. The advantage of WiFi6 lies in the concurrent use of multiple devices (such as in smart homes), while WiFi7 is more suitable for future AR/VR scenarios. Blindly chasing new things may waste the budget.

Misconception 3: Mesh networking = A panacea

Mesh can indeed solve the coverage problem of large-sized apartments, but it should be noted

  • The performance of the primary routing: No matter how strong the sub-routing is, it still depends on the bandwidth allocation of the primary routing.

  • Frequency band selection: Tri-band Mesh is more stable than dual-band (with an additional dedicated backhaul link).

  • Point layout logic: The sub-path spacing should be no more than 10 meters to avoid signal attenuation.

Selection formula: Scene + budget = answer

  • For small-sized apartments (<90 square meters) : Choose the dual-band AC1200 model, with a focus on 2.4GHz coverage (this frequency band is frequently used by smart home devices).

  • Large flat/duplex: Preferred tri-band Mesh (such as Linesee MX4200), or enterprise-level AP with external antenna;

  • Gamers: Focus on the QoS function (prioritizing game traffic allocation), rather than simply the "gaming router" label.

Signal coverage = Antenna gain × transmission power ÷ Space loss; Multi-device stability = protocol standard × memory size. To avoid the "parameter trap" and make choices based on actual scenarios, one must not pay the "tax of intelligence". Before choosing a router next time, why not ask yourself first: What problem do I need it to solve? The answer will naturally emerge.
