How Do Disinfection Robots Move Between Floors? Choosing a Robot Communication Solution for Multi-Floor Buildings

Multi-floor buildings such as veterinary hospitals, hotels, hospitals, and campuses are becoming high-frequency scenarios for service robot deployment. Disinfection robots, delivery robots, and inspection robots have matured in single-floor operation. But once cross-floor tasks are involved, problems surface quickly: when the robot reaches the elevator, the elevator won't open on its own; once inside the car, the signal drops; after exiting, network switching delays cause control commands to be lost.

The core of these problems is not insufficient capability of the robot itself, but that the coordination between robot communication and the building environment has not been established.

Three Communication Challenges in Multi-Floor Scenarios

The elevator car is a natural signal blind spot. Metal cars have a strong shielding effect on wireless signals. During the tens of seconds the robot is inside the car, if the network is interrupted, remote control commands and status reports are lost. For disinfection robots that need real-time video backhaul, this data gap is especially noticeable.

Cross-floor movement means cross-AP roaming. When the robot moves from one floor to another, it needs to switch between wireless APs on different floors. If roaming switching time is too long, control command delays, video stuttering, or even connection interruptions occur. Industrial scenarios have far lower tolerance for roaming switching than office scenarios.

Building structure determines signal coverage quality. Hospitals and veterinary hospitals have thick walls, many metal devices, and long narrow corridors—signal attenuation is far more severe than in open office areas. If AP deployment locations and quantities are unreasonable, signal blind spots appear when the robot operates in certain areas.

Several Key Capabilities of Robot Communication Solutions

For multi-floor robot scenarios, communication solutions need to meet several specific conditions.

Seamless roaming and fast switching. During robot movement, smooth switching between APs is required, with switching time controlled at the millisecond level. This requires APs to support 802.11k/v/r fast roaming protocols, combined with unified management by an AC controller, preventing the robot from repeatedly "hopping" between multiple APs on its own.

Signal reinforcement for elevator scenarios. For the car shielding problem, there are usually two approaches: one is installing a small AP or signal relay device inside the car; the other is using a 5G industrial router as a backhaul channel, bypassing the building's wireless network and going directly over the cellular network. The MovingComm ComIn I5100 industrial-grade 5G router supports 5G LAN functionality, and can serve as an independent network node in enclosed spaces such as elevator cars, keeping the robot connected during movement.

Multi-protocol compatibility and edge processing. Robots need to interact with elevator control systems, building management systems, and dispatch platforms. Communication equipment needs to be compatible with mainstream industrial protocols such as Modbus, OPC UA, and Profinet, while also possessing certain edge processing capabilities to complete command parsing and status judgment locally, reducing dependence on the cloud.

Wide-temperature, wide-voltage, and industrial-grade reliability. The equipment rooms and elevator machine rooms of hospitals and campuses are not ideal environments—temperature fluctuations and voltage instability are the norm. Communication equipment needs to support wide-temperature operating ranges and be equipped with watchdog auto-recovery mechanisms to recover from abnormal states on their own when unattended.

From Single-Point Devices to Overall Solutions

Cross-floor robot movement cannot be solved by a single device alone—it requires coordination between communication equipment, network architecture, and dispatch systems.

At the device layer, industrial routers or industrial APs provide stable wireless access; at the network layer, AC controllers or cloud management platforms handle unified management of roaming strategies and signal coverage; at the application layer, the robot dispatch system needs to interface with the elevator control system to achieve the complete process of "robot reaches elevator entrance—calls elevator—enters car—reaches target floor—continues task."

MovingComm's industrial router product line provides corresponding capability support in these links. The ComIn I5100 supports 5G LAN and multi-protocol compatibility, and can serve as a communication node during robot movement; the accompanying ComCloud cloud management platform supports device status monitoring and remote configuration, reducing on-site O&M workload in multi-floor, multi-device scenarios.

Scenarios Are Fragmenting, Solutions Are Converging

The robot elevator control direction, from the earliest general "robot rides elevator" solutions, is extending toward increasingly segmented scenarios—veterinary hospitals, libraries, airports, underground garages, hotels. Each scenario's building structure and usage requirements are different.

But no matter how scenarios are segmented, the underlying requirements converge: stable wireless connectivity, seamless roaming switching, and reliable device management. Doing these three things well gives robot cross-floor movement a replicable foundational solution.
