Fiber-to-Router Setup for Industrial Networks

In modern network technology, optical fibers have become the preferred choice for enterprise network connections due to their high-speed and stable data transmission capabilities. The basic steps of fiber optic access

  • Hardware connection
    Optical fiber modem (optical modem) : Firstly, optical fibers need to be converted through optical fiber MOdems to transform optical signals into electrical signals. Fiber optic MOdems are usually provided by network service providers and are responsible for pairing with the local office.
    Router connection: Insert the output cable of the fiber optic modem (usually an Ethernet cable) into the WAN port of the router. If it is an industrial-grade router, make sure to use the appropriate interface, such as a fiber optic interface or an Ethernet WAN port.

  • Configure the router
    Log in to the router management interface: Enter the default IP address of the router (such as 192.168.1.1) in the computer browser, and log in with the default username and password (usually admin).
    Set the WAN port parameters: In the network Settings of the router, select the WAN port Settings. According to the configuration of the service provider, select the connection type (such as PPPoE, DHCP, etc.). Enter the necessary information, such as the IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server address provided by the service provider.
    Enter the broadband account and password: If you are using a PPPoE connection, you need to enter the broadband account and password to establish the connection.

  • Wireless Settings
    Set the wireless network name (SSID) and password: Configure the wireless network name and password in the wireless Settings to ensure network security.

  • Save and restart the router
    Application Settings: Save all configurations and restart the router to make the Settings take effect.

  • Compatibility between fiber optic MOdems and routers: Ensure compatibility between fiber optic MOdems and routers, including interface types and transmission rates.

  • IP address conflict: To avoid conflicts with the LAN address segment of the optical network terminal (ONT), it may be necessary to change the LAN port address segment of the router.

  • Security configuration: Configure firewall rules to protect the network from external attacks.
